| 2009-09-19 - Director's Weekly Update |
This week at your Red Cross office-
* We started the week off with the Kick Off Luncheon for the Major
Gifts Campaign held at Trover Clinic on the 8th floor. Thanks to Bev Soria
and Denise Roberts for setting up the room and decorating it. Thanks to
Teri Barton for cooking the wonderful lasagna. AND to Murray State
Ambassadors for helping with serving and cleaning up.
* Ms. Glema Mahr allowed up to make her $10,000 pledge public at the
event. Thank you Glema!!
* The Youth Committee met to plan the final parts to Red Cross'
participation in the Kidapalooza event October 24. With the connections we
made last year at our Back to School Bash we are able to have local vendor
provide the food for those that attend this event. Napa Auto Parts will be
cooking the hot dogs.
* Monday we finished the very last part of the Military Retiree Loan
that we facilitated for a local Marine retiree. We worked on this off and
on for 6 work days.
* Tuesday the morning started out with our staff meeting. Mitzi
Geary, from the Muhlenberg County attended. She returned some of the items
we left to be used Friday morning for the downtown fire there.
* Tuesday Barbara Wilham and Hannah Parker went to the After School
Program with the Madisonville Housing Authority. Barbara discussed and
demonstrated some simple First Aid and bandaging and Hannah discussed a
Family Disaster Kit and displayed the items needed for a kit.
* Tuesday we had lunch here in the office to thank Brittany Wiersma
for her work here in the office. She may be able to return to work with us
but that is not certain at this time.
* Wednesday Tina Owen and I traveled to Cadiz to look at possible
office space in the downtown area. It is perfect and affordable. We also
met with a person who would qualify to work for 6 months under the Pennyrile
Employment Placement Program. It seems that things may be coming together
there. If the Board approves this, I have to 'jump through the hoops' for
the NHQ Lease Agreement procedure.
* I met Wednesday with one of our Board Members to discuss increasing
shelters in partnership with the faith based community.
* Thursday, the Service Delivery committee met. In July and August
in Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Caldwell Counties we have taken care of
18 emergency military communication requests. In Christian, Todd and Trigg
Counties there have been 18 requests. That is 36!! There have been 5
single family fires in Hopkins County and 5 single family fires in
Muhlenberg County for a total of 10. There have been 5 single family fires
in Christian County and one in Trigg County. That is 16 altogether!!! AND
it is not home heating season.
* Thursday, Hannah Parker was out much of the day renewing shelter
surveys in schools here in Hopkins County.
* Thursday I met with one of the Major Gifts Campaign team members,
Barbie Hunt to plan her strategy.
* Tanya Lynch was in Christian County Thursday with bookkeeping
duties.
* Brenda Parker is in Christian County today helping Red Cross at the
Chili Cook Off and Corn Hole tourney. This is part of the Freedom Festival
that is held in downtown Hopkinsville.
* I met today with 4 of the volunteers involved with our Major Gifts
Campaign. They planned their strategy for the Campaign. Chair, Kent Mills,
Captains Denise Young and Shaun Roberts and Team Member Jim Walker.
* Heather Staggs and Barbara Wilham have been involved this week with
a National Account Network agreement that will allow an employee of a
business headquartered in Hopkinsville to teach Red Cross classes at their
facilities in several states. This makes this process easy for the business
and still assures that the local Red Cross Chapters receive revenue when a
class is taught in their jurisdiction. This is a first for us and we are
learning the process.
* Brook Johnson and Hannah Parker have been busy with the Measles
Initiative Art Contest. They have more schools 'on board' to have their
students create a piece of art. They also have the Parkway Mall to agree to
display their work. We hope to create awareness of this very important
International Red Cross work.
* Ike Standifird celebrated a birthday this week AND worked to get the
word out to our Health and Safety partners about a 'free' Webex training
being offered to help prepare businesses for N1H1 Flu should it reach the
pandemic level. This is what he sent:
